Green Energy for Education

The Green Home Company offers a limited number of schools, colleges and universities across the South East of England, the benefits of having an electricity generating, solar PV system installed at no cost whatsoever. We have funding to install 180 suitable schools before 31 March 2012.

Please read on for a brief overview, or visit our dedicated website at www.greenenergyforeducation.co.uk for more detailed information.

What we offer is simple:

  • We install a solar panel system on a suitable school roof, absolutely free.
  • You get to use all of the electricity produced, saving your budget thousands of pounds every year for over 25 years.
  • We get the Feed-in-Tariff payments from the energy company, which pays us back for the installation over 25 years.
  • We will maintain the system, free of charge.
  • We will help you manage any permissions and notifications that may be necessary before the installation can commence.

The benefits for your school

  • The opportunity to dramatically reduce your electricity bills.
  • The opportunity to spread the word about renewable energy.
  • A reduction in your carbon footprint.
  • We will fit a pulic display unit showing real time information on what is being produced.
  • We can help you to link the system to your website so it can be viewed remotely at any time.
  • We will help your teaching staff to understand what renewable energy is all about so they can educate their students in an appropriate manner.

How do we qualify?

For your school to qualify for  a free solar panel system, certain criteria need to be met relating to the suitability of the location of the solar panels. We need a south facing area without obstructions so we can fit the panels to a flat or low angled roof, without any shading from trees or nearby buildings. We will need to check that these criteria can be completely fulfilled before we can move forward. As there are only 180 systems available and they have to be installed before the end of March 2012, the sooner you get in touch the better.

What work is involved?

The first step is for a technical survey to make sure that the roof space is suitable and to create a design for our install teams to work to. This should should take no more than 2 hours. A solar PV system requires us to mount the solar panels on your roof and then connect them to an inverter which converts the DC current to AC current for distribution around your school. The inverter is then connected to the main distribution unit (fuseboard) in your school. We use scaffolding to work on the roof and normally complete an installation in 3-4 days.

Why are we doing this?

The scheme introduced by the Government in April 2010 called the Feed-in-Tariff, provides incentives for anybody that decides to produce clean electricitry from renewable sources. The return on this incentive is so good that we can install and maintain a system completely free of charge and share the benefits with your school. You get to use all the electricity produced by the panels whilst we collect the Feed-in-tariff payments, that pay for the installation over 25 years.

Who does the installation?

We employ all our own installation teams so that we can be 100% certain of their training record and performance.

Why choose The Green Home Company over their competitors?

The Green Home Company is the renewable energy division of a 20 year old company called GML Construction Ltd. GML builds public buildings such as schools, outdoor centres and nurseries and has won many awards for the sustainable buildings which are its passion. We installed over £1million of solar panel systems in the south east in 2010. Any company will delight in telling you how wonderful they are. We think certain key facts make us stand head and shoulders above our competitors:

  1. We use top quality Solar PV panels.
  2. Our panels our uniquely designed to perform well in “low light” conditions. These are the conditions that prevail in the UK for long periods of the year meaning that we squeeze much more electricity out of them in any given year than can be produced from a standard solar PV panel.
  3. We employ our own installers and invest heavily in their training to make sure they are the best in the industry. Unlike many other companies we do not pass this vital role on to the lowest bidding sub-contractor.
  4. We are a 20 year old business with an £10,000,000 turnover. This means we are stable, established and trustworthy.
